Hidden toll on employment: Cut to part-time
In order to battle through times of recession companies put
staff onto part time working. Layoffs increase and companies fold. Those on part
time work have work but can't then top up their reduced salaries with other
jobs.
This may enable companies to become lean and get through times
when their order books are low but to be able to ramp up to full times working
very quickly. In the past companies made massive layoffs or delayed action until
it was too late, either way they lost key workers with knowledge of their
business and current clients.
Firms are going to short shifts instead of dumping some
workers and then having problems hiring back later. It moderates layoffs and
allows the firm to adjust to swings in demand, adding hours without having to
hire when business grows.
